How we list

Founders and startups

Every founder answers these yes or no questions. Any yes means the startup is not listed.

• Does the business sell or serve alcohol?
• Does it offer gambling or betting?
• Does it lend money at interest, or is it financed by interest-bearing loans?
• Does it sell adult content?
• Is music or musical entertainment part of its product or service?
• Does it deal in pork, tobacco or other clearly prohibited goods?

What we show

Each startup shows facts the founder declared: sector, revenue sources, financing type (equity, Islamic finance or self-funded), customers and stage. They are labelled “Declared by the founder”. If the founder uploads a certificate from an independent adviser or screening firm, we show it as “Certified by” that firm. It is their statement, never ours.

Founders re-answer the questions every 12 months, and a listing lapses if they do not. If an answer proves false, we remove the listing.

Employers

Employers are verified once at sign-up and answer these questions. Any yes means the employer is not accepted.

• Does the business sell or serve alcohol?
• Does it offer gambling or betting?
• Does it lend money at interest (for example a conventional bank, payday or credit lender)?
• Does it sell adult content?
• Does it provide music or musical entertainment?
• Does it deal in pork, tobacco or other clearly prohibited goods?

Every job and volunteering role

Each listing asks these questions again. Any yes means the listing is not accepted.

• Does the role involve serving, selling or handling alcohol?
• Does it involve selling or administering interest-based products?
• Does it involve performing, producing or promoting music?
• Does it involve handling pork, tobacco or other prohibited goods?

How it is checked

• A person checks every listing and profile against these exclusions before it goes live. Software may flag a listing, but it never publishes one.
• Listings and profiles are text only: no photos of people or animals, video or audio.
• Applications go straight to the employer. WeNabe takes no commission and does not host investment, equity or payments.
• Every listing has a report button. We remove listings whose answers prove false.

Listings meet our exclusions. That is not a ruling on what is halal; decide for yourself, with your own scholar if you wish. Spotted something wrong? Tell us.
